Lakefront Traditional
St. Simons Island, GA
Single Family Residential
This residence serves as a study in regional adaptation, bridging the gap between traditional coastal classicism and a contemporary interior aesthetic. Situated on a sensitive waterfront site, the design intent was to create a structure that feels both grand in presence and intimate in scale. The primary massing is rooted in regional vernacular, utilizing whitewashed brick and traditional roof lines to anchor the building firmly to the landscape.
The design utilizes a highly deliberate approach, beginning with a circular arrival court that guides the visitor through a rhythmic sequence, creating a sense of decompression upon entry. Inside, the home prioritizes a clean, minimalist palette where light, volume, and curated materials define the user experience. Bespoke, full height millwork, often executed in a moody, sophisticated palette, provides a grounding contrast to the light and airy circulation paths that define the home’s interior character.
The material schedule emphasizes warmth and texture throughout the residence. Elements like herringbone stone flooring and rich wood cabinetry create an interplay of shadow and light, establishing an atmospheric quality in key spaces. This attention to detail extends to the layout, which maximizes the surrounding waterfront views. By utilizing a porous rear elevation with expansive openings, the design effectively dissolves the boundary between the interior living areas and the outdoor terrace, ensuring the landscape remains the central focus.
